Nontraditional Indian Elopement in New York City

Some weddings follow long-standing traditions, while others create brand new ones! Rhea and Akshay planned an Indian elopement that reflected the life they built together in New York City instead of following a traditional wedding timeline. Rather than choosing either a large Indian wedding or a classic American wedding, they blended meaningful pieces of both into an experience that felt completely their own. As a result, every stop throughout the weekend had a story behind it, and every guest got to experience the places that meant the most to them.
An Indian Elopement That Started at the Iconic Manhattan Courthouse
Their wedding day began at the iconic Manhattan courthouse with its famous green doors. There is something so timeless about getting married in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world. However, what made this ceremony even more memorable was knowing it was only the beginning of their celebration!
Instead of rushing off to a reception, Rhea and Akshay embraced the city exactly as they always had. After saying “I do,” they hopped on the subway and headed back toward their apartment. Watching newlyweds ride the subway in full wedding attire definitely turned a few heads! It felt effortless and perfectly fitting for a couple who wanted their wedding day to feel like an extension of their everyday life together.
Pizza, Brooklyn Views, and the Best City Portraits for an Indian Elopement
Next, they stopped for pizza at one of their favorite neighborhood spots before making their way to Domino Park in Brooklyn for portraits. Rather than searching for elaborate backdrops, they chose places filled with memories. Because of that, every photo felt personal instead of staged.
As we walked through Domino Park, the New York City skyline created the perfect backdrop for portraits. The energy of the city surrounded us, yet the entire afternoon still felt relaxed. Personally, I loved photographing them in locations that already held so much meaning. Instead of creating moments, we were simply documenting the ones that naturally unfolded.
Before dinner, we made one more stop at Old Friends Photo Booth. Guests piled into the booth together. They laughed through every strip of photos, and instantly created keepsakes they could take home that same night. It was such a fun addition, and everyone was excited to jump in for another round!
An Intimate Candlelit Dinner in Manhattan
That evening, everyone gathered for a candlelit vegetarian dinner at Soda Club in Manhattan. Rather than hosting a huge reception immediately after the ceremony, Rhea and Akshay invited only their closest family and friends for an intimate celebration.
The atmosphere felt warm from the moment guests arrived. It honestly felt more like a dinner party than a traditional wedding reception, which was exactly what they envisioned.
A Brooklyn Reception to Celebrate With Everyone
The celebration continued the following day with a larger reception at Talea Brewery in Brooklyn. This allowed the couple to celebrate with an even bigger group of family and friends while keeping the relaxed atmosphere they loved.
Guests enjoyed incredible pizza, listened to heartfelt speeches, and then filled the dance floor for the rest of the evening. It was amazing to watch everyone come together while celebrating Rhea and Akshay in such an authentic way. Although this reception looked completely different from a traditional Indian wedding, it still carried so much meaning because it reflected who they are as a couple.
Why This Indian Elopement Was So Special
What made this Indian elopement unforgettable was how intentionally every decision reflected their relationship. While many Indian weddings are known for large celebrations spanning multiple days, Rhea and Akshay chose to celebrate in a way that honored both their heritage and the life they have built together in New York City. Every location represented a chapter of their story. As their photographer, I loved seeing how naturally the entire weekend unfolded because nothing felt forced. It simply felt like them.
