Some weddings are beautiful because of the details. Others stay with you because of the way they make you feel. Meklit and Yafet’s traditional Ethiopian wedding was one of those celebrations that I won’t forget! Every part of their two day wedding weekend reflected who they are as a couple. Instead of fitting everything into one busy day, they chose to celebrate over an entire weekend. This way, they could honor both their Ethiopian heritage and their deep faith. As their photographer, it was such a privilege to document every moment of their story!

A Two Day Traditional Ethiopian Wedding Weekend in Washington, DC

The celebration began at The Mayflower Hotel in downtown Washington, DC, where everyone got ready before heading to the National United Methodist Church for the ceremony. From the start, the atmosphere felt peaceful and intentional. Friends and family spent the morning helping one another prepare. There was so much excitement leading up to the ceremony!

Their church service reflected the importance of their faith, and every part of the day felt centered around worship and community. Instead of following the ceremony with a traditional ballroom reception, Meklit and Yafet decided to do something a little different! They changed outfits before welcoming nearly 400 guests to Le Grande Boucherie for an elegant dinner celebration in the heart of Washington, DC.

Choosing a two day wedding weekend gave them the opportunity to slow down. This way, they were able to fully enjoy every part of their celebration. Rather than rushing from one event to the next, they created space for each experience to have its own meaning. It also allowed their cultural traditions to become the focus of the second day. Which made the entire weekend feel even more intentional.

Honoring Ethiopian Wedding Traditions

The second day of the weekend centered around their traditional Ethiopian wedding celebration. Meklit and Yafet changed into beautiful traditional Ethiopian wedding attire that represented generations of family history while perfectly complementing their modern wedding weekend. Seeing them together in these garments was one of my favorite moments to photograph! Every portrait carried so much meaning. Throughout the reception, Ethiopian worship songs filled the room and created such a joyful atmosphere.

One tradition that stood out was the Ethiopian coffee ceremony, also known as jebena buna. This ceremony symbolizes hospitality, respect, and the joining of two families. During the ceremony, women roast, grind, and brew fresh coffee before serving it in three rounds that offer blessings for peace, prosperity, and a joyful marriage. Watching this tradition unfold reminded everyone that a wedding celebrates not only the couple but also the families coming together.

I loved seeing how naturally Meklit and Yafet blended timeless traditions with a modern wedding weekend. Nothing felt performative. Every moment reflected who they are, and that authenticity made the celebration even more memorable!

Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery

Before the second reception, we met at the National Portrait Gallery for portraits with the couple and their bridal party. The classic architecture paired beautifully with their traditional Ethiopian wedding attire, and the timeless setting allowed every detail to stand out without distracting from the people in front of the camera.

One of my favorite parts about photographing a multi day wedding is how relaxed everyone feels by the second day. The timeline isn’t packed from morning until midnight, so couples have the opportunity to slow down and actually enjoy the portrait experience. You can see that comfort in every image, and I think it creates photographs that feel even more genuine.

As their photographer, I loved documenting not only the big moments but also the quiet interactions between them throughout the weekend. Those are often the memories couples cherish most years later, and having two days together gave us so many opportunities to capture them.
